Police charge Madrid man for break-in attempt, pursuit at OFA
Nov. 6—OGDENSBURG — A Madrid man is in custody after trying to break into Ogdensburg Free Academy Wednesday morning and brandishing a knife at its school resource officer, according to Ogdensburg police.
City police reported that at about 10:07 a.m., officers responded to a complaint of a man attempting to gain entrance into OFA with a weapon.
"When the male was confronted by the school staff, the suspect brandished a makeshift weapon, threatening the staff. Upon the School Resource Officer arriving at the male's location, he had fled on foot, causing a pursuit. When the SRO made closure on the male, he turned and brandished a knife at the officer," city police stated in a press release.
Police add that the man, Stanley W. Greer Jr., 39, of Madrid, was subdued after a foot pursuit.
Greer was charged with four counts of second-degree menacing, one count of second-degree menacing a police officer, one count of resisting arrest, five counts of criminal possession of a weapons and one count of second-degree attempted burglary.
Greer is currently being a held at the Ogdensburg Police Department awaiting arraignment at Ogdensburg City Court.
In a statement to district families and staff, Superintendent Kevin Kendall said lockdown procedures were implemented "for the safety of staff and students."
"As we always have, the safety of our staff and students is our top priority, at no point were our staff or students in danger during this situation. We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for the work of the Ogdensburg City Police Department and the New York State Police for their timely and urgent response. The work they do to assist in making our schools and city safe is appreciated," stated Kendall. "We realize this incident can be unsettling to families, but know that as a community we, along with law enforcement, need to stay vigilant to be aware of our surroundings to keep our staff and students within the district safe and secure."
