COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - An hours-long standoff involving a kidnapping suspect came to an end after officers say they found the man hiding in a neighbor's attic.

According to police, the situation started Saturday morning in the area of Del Paz Drive and Union Boulevard. The area is a few blocks from North Academy.

"Officers learned a female had walked into a business and informed a staff worker she had been kidnapped. While in the business, the male who had kidnapped the female entered the business and directed the female out and they left."

Employees called police, who were able to track down a potential address for the suspect and victim on the other side of town near Ivywild School.

"Upon arrival, officers attempted numerous times to make contact at the residence to no avail," a CSPD lieutenant said.

Officers then forced their way into the home to rescue the victim.

"The female was located on the second level of the residence and after some time she was able to escape the residence. The female confirmed to law enforcement she had been taken against her will at gunpoint and held against her will in the residence."

With the woman safely out, the situation became a standoff with the suspect, who the victim confirmed was still in the home.

"Members from the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU), K9 Unit, Drone Unit, and negotiator unit responded to assist," the lieutenant said.

The standoff continued for hours. The home was located on Lorraine Street between Cheyenne Boulevard and Brookside, and a shelter-in-place order was put into effect for homes within a several-block radius:

During the standoff, law enforcement could be heard shouting at the suspect over a megaphone, ordering him to surrender. Neighbors reported hearing several flashbangs.

Late Saturday afternoon, officers finally obtained a search warrant to go into the home and bring the suspect out. After several more attempts to get him to exit on his own, SWAT decided to check the next-door neighbor's home, which was attached to the residence where the suspect had been holed up.

"The suspect had traversed through the attic and broken into the neighbor's residence through the ceiling, where he was found hiding," the lieutenant said.

The suspect was taken into custody and faces a slew of charges, including a previous arrest warrant unrelated to the alleged events Saturday.

Police have identified the suspect as Jason Cobb. Jail records indicate he is being held in the El Paso County jail without bond.
