Sep. 13—SOUTH BEND — A man previously living in Goshen was sentenced to two years in federal prison for illegally entering the country.

Jose De Leon Medina, 39, of Mexico, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to illegal reentry of a removed alien and failure to register as a sex offender.

Living in Elkhart at the time, De Leon Medina was accused of sexually touching a child around 12 years old or younger at different times from approximately April through October 2016. In December 2019, he was sentenced by plea agreement a total of five years at the Indiana Department of Corrections and five years of probation for child molesting, a Level 3 felony; and child molesting, a Level 4 felony.

The conviction required him to register as a sex offender. After De Leon Medina completed his sentence of imprisonment for the crime, he was removed from the United States to Mexico.

But two months later, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials learned that De Leon Medina had illegally reentered the United States, was living in Goshen and had failed to register as a sex offender.

De Leon Medina was sentenced to 24 months in prison for the most recent charges.

This case was investigated by U.S, Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jerome W. McKeever.

A man was hospitalized on Friday afternoon following a crash on C.R. 17.

According to Elkhart County deputies, Terry Sauer, 67, of Goshen, was travelling south on C.R. 17 at Ind. 119 in a 2015 Ford F-150 when he rear ended a 2011 Ford Escape driven by Brandon Hyndman, 33, of Goshen, that was stopped at the red light, pushing the Escape into the intersection.
