Pomona College alum pledges $10 million to the campus
Pomona College has received a $10 million gift from an alum to support students and faculty and to fund new programs.
Sue E. Berryman, a 1959 graduate, made the pledge in honor of her family, which also graduated from the college, which is in Claremont. The money will establish permanent funding sources for humanities, music, scholarships and faculty innovation, a news release states.
"A liberal arts education provides multiple windows to relate to the world," Berryman said in the release. "It inspires curiosity and helps students develop the confidence and capacity to learn new fields. "... My liberal arts education at Pomona paved the way to not only a rich life, but also a prosperous career."
Berryman graduated with a degree in English and creative writing, joining her mother Frances Bowers Berryman, a 1930 alum; her father John Jordan Berryman, a 1928 alum; and aunt Ellen Evelyn Bowers, a 1931 alum.
"The gift will be transformative for our faculty and our students, and it will keep the tenacious, inquisitive spirit of the Berryman family moving forward for generations to come," Pomona College President G. Gabrielle Starr said in the release.
Berryman earned a doctorate in political economy from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She worked at Harvard Business School, the RAND Corporation, the World Bank and Columbia University, where she was director of the Institute of Education and Economy.
