According to a health department news release, a sentinel chicken used by the MCHD recently tested positive for WNV in the 36528 ZIP Code area.
The positive test comes after a chicken in the 36521 ZIP Code area tested positive last week, and a specimen in a mosquito trap in the 36541 ZIP Code area tested positive in October. There have also been two positive human cases in 2024.
Following the series of positive tests, officials advise residents to continue taking measures to lower the risk of more cases.
"WNV is present in our county," Dr. Michaels said. "Personal protective measures are important to avoid contact with mosquitoes. I suggest using mosquito repellant, screens on widows, and making the environment inhospitable to mosquitoes."
Other tips the MCHD recommended include wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants and removing standing water around the home.
