Pregnant woman found brutally slain inside Broward home, cops say. Her partner jailed

A Hallandale Beach man faces two counts of second-degree murder after police say he killed the pregnant mother of his expected child.

The discovery of the woman's body came last Tuesday around 9 p.m. after police responded to a daycare, where the couple's other children — ages 8 and 9 — attend and were not picked up. The parents were known for their punctuality, and staff became concerned when they didn't show up, according to Hallandale Beach police spokeswoman Grace Mariot.

Daycare staff called another family member to pick up the children. That family member became concerned when the family's car was parked in front of the home. The family member called police, detailing the parent's history of domestic disputes and the father's history of mental health issues and making threats, Mariot said.

When police made entry into the home, Mariot said they found the father, 38-year-old Victor Chavez, Sr., unresponsive in the bedroom.

Officers then found the body of a woman in the bathroom, Mariot said. Police have not named her, she is identified as 41-year-old Delfina Perez Chilel, according to a GoFundMe post created by the victim's sister.

"The female victim, who was 20 weeks pregnant, exhibited severe injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene despite immediate medical intervention," Mariot said.

Paramedics took Chavez, who Mariot described as lethargic and unresponsive, to a hospital for treatment.

He was arrested Saturday after he recovered. According to Mariot, after being read his rights, he confessed to murdering Chilel and trying to kill himself.

Mariot said police are not releasing the method in which Chavez used to kill Chilel, nor how he attempted to take his own life because the case "remains an active investigation."

The children are in the custody of family members, Mariot said, as did Chilel's sister, Cosme Abel de Leon Mazariegos, in the GoFundMe post .

"I am left to raise her two beautiful children along with mine now. Their lives will not be easy. They are the true victims of this tragedy. I pray we as a family are enough and that we do right by them," de Leon Mazariegos wrote. "Tragically, she was a victim of domestic abuse and now she is no longer with us. Our niece and nephew have lost both their parents in the blink of an eye."

The family is trying to raise money to send Chilel's body to be buried in her home country of Guatemala, according to the post.

"We are beside ourselves trying to understand. So many unanswered questions as the case is under investigation," de Leon Mazariegos wrote. "My parents await in agony for the return home of their firstborn. The travel costs of her body are beyond our reach."
