KOROR, Palau – President Whipps departed Palau over the weekend on a diplomatic mission to the United States. He plans to return in time for the final Independence Day celebrations on October 1st.

Whipps arrived in New York on Sunday morning, where he is set to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden during the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This engagement marks the third meeting between the two leaders. The discussions will focus on economic security for Palau, including the signing of a Peace Corps agreement beneficial to the nation. Additional topics include U.S. commitments regarding a new hospital project outside the Compact Agreement and the recent $20 million aid package for Palau's Pension Plan Program.

At the UNGA, President Whipps intends to advocate for the ratification of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) treaty. Palau was the first country to ratify this important agreement—which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine areas beyond national jurisdiction—in 2023. Whipps will also promote the Unlocking the Pacific Blue Prosperity program and seek funding for climate change initiatives.

On his return trip, Whipps will stop in Taiwan to participate in the World Taiwan Chamber of Commerce forum in Kaohsiung. He was invited by Taiwanese President Lai and Foreign Minister Lin to connect with potential Taiwanese investors interested in opportunities in Palau.

The president expressed his commitment to returning for the Independence Day celebrations in Ngerulmud.
