Pre-Thanksgiving Storm Timeline Updated: What It Means For MD
MARYLAND — A storm system packing heavy rain and high winds is expected to hit Maryland and impact holiday travel on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of Thanksgiving. So when should you hit the road? Let's take a look.
Widespread rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected to move into the area on Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest to fall mainly during the overnight hours into Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
"Even though the storm will provide some much-needed moisture in areas of abnormally dry to building drought conditions, it will come at a bad time as millions of Americans will be traveling prior to Thanksgiving," AccuWeather forecasters said Tuesday.
In the Baltimore area, rain could be heavy at times Tuesday night, with a southeast wind 15 to 20 mph. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Flash flooding is possible, especially in poor drainage areas.
For western Maryland, a winter weather advisory will remain in effect until 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Mixed precipitation is in the forecast, with additional ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch and winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
"The stiff east-to-southeast winds averaging 25-35 mph with gusts of 40-45 mph can pose a problem at some of the airports from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia and New York City with the worst conditions likely from late Tuesday afternoon to Tuesday evening," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said Tuesday.
Airline delays are most likely during this time due to winds, drenching rain and poor visibility, he said.
(National Weather Service)The messy weather will clear out Wednesday, followed by a sunny, seasonable day on Thanksgiving , according to the Capital Weather Gang.
On the Eastern Shore, minor coastal flooding is expected for the Tuesday night high tide cycle, according to the NWS.
A coastal flood warning is in effect from 7 p.m. on Tuesday to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. One to two feet of inundation above ground level is expected in Anne Arundel County and other low-lying areas due to tidal flooding.
