Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Have Not Publicly Endorsed a Candidate in the 2024 Presidential Race

Back in 2020, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry attracted much attention when they posted a video encouraging people to vote ahead of the Trump-Biden election, with Meghan describing it as the "most important election of our lifetime." The then President Trump was asked about it at a White House press briefing and responded by saying he was "not a fan" of Meghan's. The video also sparked criticism from some commentators suggesting the couple were not politically neutral and should have been more so.

Four years on and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have remained silent on the upcoming Trump-Harris election. Meghan has previously spoken of her excitement about Harris as a Vice President candidate, and Harris in turn has posted on social media in support of the Duchess. However, neither Meghan nor Harry has made any public statement about either Harris or Trump since their Presidential contest began. The Telegraph newspaper reported this week that they are expected to remain non-partisan and will not make any official endorsement.

The Sussexes' Archewell Foundation has, however, made a statement via its website encouraging everyone to vote. Highlighting the work of Vote Forward, a nonprofit which encourages volunteers to send handwritten letters encouraging voter turnout, Archewell said that team-members have got involved. "Using Vote Forward's impactful letter-writing tool, our team wrote personalized letters encouraging unregistered voters to take a crucial step: registering to vote" the organization said in a post.

Harry and Meghan's decision to be less vocal than in 2020 could well have been taken with the backlash they received then in mind. Members of the royal family are expected to remain politically neutral in the UK and, while the Sussexes have walked away from working royal life, they are still members of the family.
