Prince William County Car Tax Deadline Extended Past October Prince William County car owners will have more time to pay the personal property tax this year due to an extended deadline.

— While many Northern Virginia localities will collect car tax payments in October, Prince William County residents will have more time to pay the tax this year.

Earlier in September, the Board of County Supervisors approved an extended deadline for the personal property tax on cars payments. Residents and businesses will have until Dec. 5 to pay the tax bill without incurring a penalty. The original deadline was Oct. 7.

The extension does not apply to business tangible taxes, which are still due on Oct. 7. The cities of Manassas and Manassas Park still have Oct. 7 due dates for their car tax.

The county still encourages residents to submit payments before the new deadline. Payments may be done through the county's taxpayer portal , in person at the Taxpayer Services Office, through the mail or over the phone.

The Taxpayer Services Office locations are the Sudley North Government Center, 7987 Ashton Avenue in Manassas, and at the McCoart Administration Building located at 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge. Hours are offered Monday through Friday.

Vehicles are assessed for the personal property tax using the J.D. Power (NADA) clean trade-in value as of Jan. 1 of each year and the tax rate of $3.70 per $100 of the assessed value. A portion of the tax may be offset by the state's Personal Property Tax Relief Act funds , which depend on the vehicle value. Prince William County charges a registration fee along with the annual tax. The Board of County Supervisors sets the tax rate through the annual budget process, and the rate did not change in the last budget .
