Procession, memorial service for fallen Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia to take place Wednesday – Houston Public Media

A procession will move through the streets of downtown Houston Wednesday morning ahead of a memorial service in honor of Houston firefighter Marcelo Garcia, who died while fighting a warehouse blaze in Houston's East End last week.

The firefighter procession will depart at 8 a.m. from Fire Station 8 at 1818 Louisiana St. before making its way to the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 1111 St. Joseph Pkwy. The memorial service begins at 9 a.m. and the following roads will be closed until noon:

Fannin St. between Pierce and Jefferson St. San Jacinto St. between Pierce St. and Jefferson St. St. Joseph Parkway between Pierce St. and Jefferson St. Louisiana St. between Pierce St. and Jefferson St. Jefferson St. from Smith St. to San Jacinto St. Smith St. between Pierce St. and Jefferson St.

Garcia was remembered as a hero at 10-year veteran of the Houston Fire Department. He spent his last six years with the department at station 23 in Houston's Greater East End.

"You ask what type of man he was? He's a man that woke up every morning to come to work so he could help others and save lives," Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz said during a tearful press conference after his death. "A hero, a true hero."
