WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Rapheal Davis scored 20 points and Purdue staved off a late rally to upset No. 20 Ohio State 60-58.
The surging Boilermakers (15-8, 7-3 Big Ten) have won four straight overall and three in a row over ranked teams — the first time they’ve done that as an unranked team since early 1979.
The Buckeyes (17-6, 6-4) were led by D’Angelo Russell’s 20 points, but his 40-foot desperation heave at the buzzer came up way short.
Ohio State played without Marc Loving, suspended for unknown reasons. Yet the Buckeyes hung tough. After trailing 36-28 early in the second half, they charged back to take two brief leads, at 41-40 and 44-42.
Purdue then answered with 10 straight points to make it 52-44. But the Boilermakers’ woeful free-throw shooting allowed Ohio State to get as close as 59-58 with 6.4 seconds left.
No. 10 Notre Dame 71, Boston College 63
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jerian Grant and Steve Vasturia scored 17 points apiece, and No. 10 Notre Dame held off Boston College.
Zach Auguste added 16 points for the Fighting Irish (21-3, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who bounced back from a disappointing loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday. Pat Connaughton finished with 11.
Olivier Hanlan, who led Boston College with 28 points, hit four consecutive 3-pointers to cut Notre Dame’s lead to 67-61 with 1:47 left. But the Eagles’ rally fizzled from there.
No. 18 VCU 72, George Mason 60
FAIRFAX, Va. — Melvin Johnson scored 17 points to lead No. 18 VCU to a 72-60 victory over George Mason on Wednesday night.
JeQuan Lewis, starting in place of injured point guard Briante Weber, added 13 points as the Rams (18-4, 8-1 Atlantic 10) won for the 11th time in their last 12 games.
No. 7 Villanova 70, Marquette 50
PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Arcidiacono scored 18 points and Darrun Hilliard had 12 to lead No. 7 Villanova to a win over Marquette.
Daniel Ochefu grabbed nine rebounds and Josh Hart scored 11 points in the latest romp for Villanova (20-2, 7-2 Big East). The Wildcats shook off a slow start to roll past the Golden Eagles (10-12, 2-8) and send them to their sixth straight loss.
No. 4 Duke 72, Georgia Tech 66
DURHAM, N.C. — Quinn Cook scored all 17 of his points in the second half, and No. 4 Duke beat Georgia Tech to give coach Mike Krzyzewski his Atlantic Coast Conference-record 423rd league win.
Justise Winslow added 15 points and fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor had 14 for the Blue Devils (19-3, 5-3).
