Purple streetlights still glowing in Vegas Valley

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) - FOX5 first reported about unusual illumination at the beginning of the year throughout the Vegas Valley, purple streetlights impacting intersections and pedestrian crosswalks. The concern: a lower level of light makes the roads less safe. It is not intentional. The purple hue is due to a manufacturers defect. "What if they have an accident there," questioned Darrin Robinson, who works at a gas station at the intersection of Ann Road and Clayton in North Las Vegas. Back in January, blue lights glowed above every corner, Robinson says days after posing that question, there was a crash. "I knew it was possible," Robinson stated. There has been a big change, the difference night and day. "Look at it now. Look we can see a pedestrian from here," shared Dontae Hensley who lives nearby standing outside the gas station. According to Robinson, all the lights were replaced about a month ago with white lights and the intersection is significantly brighter. However, many other intersections remain blue. In Henderson, Boulder Highway and Corn near the Skyline Casino and Boulder Highway and Lowery near Lake Mead Parkway.

In Clark County, Boulder Highway and Kentucky.

In North Las Vegas, Craig and Interstate 15, North 5th and Washburn, Ann Road and Revere Street, and Ann Road and Allen Lane. "This is the only street corner in this area that was fixed...brighten up our lights make sure our streets are safe," Robinson demanded.

Back in January, FOX5 reached out the cities of North Las Vegas and Henderson. Both said the lights would be fixed. We reached back out to North Las Vegas this week but did not hear back.

Henderson said it would fix the lights during the Reimagine Boulder Highway Project which began last month and is currently underway.

Issues with LED streetlights turning purple were reported as early as 2021. According to a Scientific American report, the hue could affect how drivers and pedestrians perceive their surroundings and making the purple streetlights a potential safety hazard.
