COLLEGE MEN

No. 2 UW-Whitewater 93, Augustana 79: The Augustana College men’s basketball team had flashes of solid play on Tuesday against the No. 2 NCAA Div. III team in the country, but was handed a 93-78 setback by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The hosts shot 50% (10 of 20) from 3-point range and 56.4% from the field.

"That team's got a chance to do some great things this year," said Augie coach Tom Jesses of a Warhawks team that basically returns intact from a Final Four run last season. "... Clearly, we didn't play well enough defensively, but we played so much better offensively than we have been playing."

Augie led 16-11 at the 13:01 mark of the first half when Anthony Cooper (8 points) hit a 3-pointer off an Evan Ambrose feed.

Augie got stuck on 16, though, not scoring again until Tyler Knuth’s layup with 8:47 left and by that point, the Vikings trailed 28-18.

The Vikings, who trailed by double digits the rest of the way, found themselves looking up at a 49-33 halftime deficit.

Augie, which dropped to 1-4 with its fourth straight loss, made a nice little run in the second half to pull within 76-66 on freshman Zach Anderson’s layup with 7:45 left, but the hosting Warhawks answered and pulled away for their fourth straight victory to open the season.

Knuth led the three Vikings in double-digit scoring, popping for 20. Matt Hawkins added 14 and Mike Hamilton 10 for a team that shot 45% from the field and 37% from 3-point range. Anderson led Augie with five rebounds, but the guests were out-rebounded 37-25.

UW-Whitewater had four players finish in double-figure scoring. Miles Barnstable drilled six 3-pointers en route to his game-high 23 points. Trevon Chislom added 20 points to go with seven assists. Delvin Barnstable added 14 points and led the hosts with seven rebounds. Carter Capstran added 10 points.

COLLEGE WOMEN

St. Francis (Ill.) 68, St. Ambrose 60: The St. Ambrose University women’s basketball team was outscored by eight points in the middle two quarters when visiting St. Francis (Ill.) scored 21 in each stanza and that proved to be the difference as the hosting Fighting Bees dropped a 68-60 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest Tuesday at Lee Lohman Arena.

Starters for SAU (0-3, 0-1 CCAC) scored all but five of the team’s points. Abby Wolter led the Bees and all players with 21 points and Caitlyn Thole added 19.

Baylei Johnson led the Saints (4-3, 1-0 CCAC) with 20 points.
