Rain, snowmaker on the way for Michigan ahead of Thanksgiving travel

The weather is going to take a turn for the worse as we head into Tuesday. A low pressure system is going to approach us from the south, giving us rain and snow chances across Michigan. Who will get what will depend on where you’re located in the state.

Temperatures on Tuesday are going to start off in the 30s and 40s, with areas in northern Lower Michigan and the U.P. seeing temperatures in the low to mid 30s and the southern half of The Mitten starting off in the low 40s. Things will warm up a bit from there, but not by much, with areas further south staying in the low to mid 40s and areas in the north staying in the mid 30s.

By late tonight and early tomorrow morning, rain is going to make its way from south to north across Michigan as the low approaches. Since it will be warmer in the southern Lower Peninsula, any precipitation is going to remain rain as dawn approaches. Most of the precipitation further north is going to stay in the eastern U.P., where temperatures will be colder to start, allowing for any precipitation to remain mostly snow.

As we progress later into the day, the southern portion of the state is going to continue to see rain while the U.P. could see some rain mix in with any snow as temperatures rise during the day. Areas in central and northern Lower Michigan could see a transition from rain to snow during the afternoon.

By evening, most of the rain and snow will have moved out of the state. Some lingering rain and snow showers might be around in the Lower Peninsula early on, but they will clear out by later in the night. Some icy areas might develop due to dropping temperatures on Tuesday night.

When it comes to accumulation, there won’t be much. In central and northern Lower Michigan, at most an inch of snow is looking like the total we’ll be expecting, if we get any accumulations. In the Eastern U.P., snow totals are going to be about the same, sticking to around an inch or less.

While there won’t be much snow, still plan for slick spots on the roadways in areas where frozen precipitation is possible. Places could see a good amount of rainfall during the day on Tuesday as well, with up to a half inch or more of rain expected. Ponding on roadways could occur. Remember to take your time, and travel safely.
