Ralph Harvey Jr. receives historical marker in his honor

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Texas Historical Commission recognized Wichita Falls legend Ralph Harvey Jr. with an official Texas historical marker at the Museum of North Texas History.

"Ralph is one of the founders of the Museum of North Texas History, and he's also one of the founders of the Wichita county archives and has also been instrumental in the Fort Belknap archives," Wichita County Historic Commission, marker chair Becky Trammell said.

While most markers are created for those who made history, this achievement serves as a unique commemoration.

"We have over 100 markers in Wichita county right now, and this is our first marker that commemorates someone whose accomplishment was preservation of history, "Trammell said.

Harvey was said to have strong leadership qualities that blossomed through his love for history, qualities Trammell said she's experienced through those who knew him best.

"I was never lucky enough to meet Mr. Harvey, I wish I had, but I know people who knew Ralph, so I know a number of friends of Ralph, and that group has certainly been mentors to a whole other generation of which I'm one of them," Trammell said.

As the Museum of North Texas marks 25 years next March, Trammell encourages the community to invest in history, just like Harvey did.

"As individuals in our community, we're all involved in history. We're living it today. Each of us can do our part to preserve history because when we preserve history we know where we come from and the legacy of Ralph Harvey and the legacy of that group that started the museum is just that, "Trammell said.

Those interested in checking out the newly placed marker can find it at the entrance of the Museum of North Texas History in Downtown Wichita Falls.
