Real Madrid suffered their second-straight defeat at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, as they were soundly beaten by AC Milan in the Champions League .

Carlo Ancelotti 's side, the defending champions, stared down a shock defeat in their last home game in the European Cup against Borussia Dortmund before Vinicius Jr inspired an impressive comeback.

There were no such heroics against the Italian side, who claimed a famous victory, their second in the competition this term, thanks to goals from Malick Thiaw, ex-Madrid striker Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders.

Defeat leaves the Spanish giants languishing in 17th in the Champions League group phase standings ahead of a tough trip to Anfield to face Liverpool next time out.

'We are going through a period when our opponents are punishing us a lot and we have to keep working so that this doesn't happen again,' Madrid defender Lucas Vazquez told Movistar.

Ancelotti's side, who were hammered 4-0 by bitter rivals Barcelona in their last fixture have now conceded nine goals in their last three home matches.

Vazquez added: 'Obviously that is a very bad number, I think that both defending and attacking is a collective thing, I think that's where we have to put the emphasis.

'In the end I think that we'll get out of this together... (we have) to keep our heads up, to keep working, this is very long and Madrid will fight until the end.'

Madrid were looking to bounce back from their recent struggles but their fell behind after only 12 minutes after Thiaw's near-post header from a corner.

The home side were able to hit back relatively quickly thanks to Vinicius Jr's spot-kick. The Brazilian was fouled by former Tottenham defender Emerson Royal and rose to draw his side level in the 23rd minute.

But Ancelotti's side were unable to stop the visitors from retaking the lead when Morata responded quickest from Andriy Lunin's save from Rafael Leao.

Paulo Fonseca's side made the points save 17 minutes before the end when Leao teed up Reijnders after a stunning solo run.

Madrid thought they had found a foothold back in the tie when Antonio Rudiger scored from close range but the effort was ruled out for offside. Victory sees Milan draw level with Madrid on six points from their first four Champions League matches.

Teams who finish in the top eight places automatically qualify for the last-16, while those finishing nine to 24 will have to contend a play-off to secure a place in the next round.
