Recap: Detroit Lions can’t survive another sloppy game, lose to Packers 29-22

Last week, the Detroit Lions survived a sloppy game. Despite turning the ball over four times and letting and letting Justin Fields rush for over 100 yards, the Lions defense mounted a furious comeback.

There was no such luck against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving. The Lions were just as sloppy on offense, with Jared Goff committing three lost fumbles, and the defense continues to display serious problems both in coverage and pass rush.

Perhaps most shocking of all, the Packers dominated both sides of the lines. The Lions running game couldn’t develop any rhythm, while Goff was under pressure all game. Green Bay, on the other hand, kept Jordan Love clean most of the game and were able to find some relative success on the ground.

The Packers would walk away with a 29-22 over Detroit, as the Lions drop to 8-3 on the season.

First quarter The Green Bay Packers won the toss and elected to receive. So for the second straight week, the Lions defense would take the field first and for the second straight week they gave up a touchdown on the opening drive. On the very first play, Jordan Love went DEEP for a 53-yard bomb to Christian Watson.

Four plays later, he found Jayden Reed on a short slant for an 11-yard touchdown.

— NFL November 23, 2023 The Lions offense answered. They picked up an early third-and-7 conversion with a crossing route to Jameson Williams for 13. A 16-yard pass interference penalty and a 31-yard pass to Sam LaPorta quickly set the Lions up in a first-and-goal situation.

Two plays later, jared Goff went right back to LaPorta for a 7-yard score, but Riley Patterson missed the extra point.

Green Bay went right back to work with a 16-yard pass to Malik Heath. Then Watson made an acrobatic catch to convert a third-and-8 to move into Detroit territory. An end-around to Reed moved Green Bay into the red zone. A few plays later on a third-and-1, the Packers pulled off an excellent play action that left rookie tight end Tucker Kraft wide open for a 9-yard score and a lead.

The Packers would make the first big defensive play of the game. Facing a second-and-12, the Goff was hit while throwing and lost the ball before moving his arm was forward. Green Bay’s Jonathan Owens scooped it up and just like that, it was already (Packers PAT miss).

The next offensive drive didn’t go any better for Detroit. Goff scrambled on third-and-5, fumbled again, and the Packers recovered at the Packers 23-yard line.

On the first play of the drive, Lions defensive tackle took a shot from teammate Jack Campbell and was very slow to get up. He was immediately evaluated for a concussion. He would return to play on the next drive.

Meanwhile, the Packers worked their way to a fourth-and-1 at the Lions’ 14-yard line and opted to go for it on the first play of the...

Second quarter The Packers choked the fourth-down conversion with Jordan Love colliding with AJ Dillon in the backfield, allowing the Lions to make the run stop short of the sticks.

— NFL Brasil November 23, 2023 The Lions were able to drive to midfield, but Goff missed a wide open LaPorta on third-and-3, and Detroit punted back to Green Bay still down two scores.

The Packers quickly got out of the shadow of their own end zone with a 24-yard pass to Dillon. An 18-yard dart to Doubs moved Green Bay into field goal range. The drive would stall there, and the Packers would add a 43-yard field goal to make it with 5:56 remaining in the first half.

After getting bailed out by an illegal contact penalty on a third-and-10, Goff found Kalif Raymond for a big 20-yard gain. But an intentional grounding set them way back on downs. Detroit managed to work their way back into a fourth-and-4. But Goff was hammered as he threw the ball and the Packers took over at their own 35-yard line with 1:58 left.

The Packers would cross midfield, but Detroit’s defense would end up getting a stop before they moved into field goal territory.

With 35 seconds left and all three timeouts—starting on their own 16-yard line—the Lions tried to get something going, but Detroit committed a couple penalties and punted the ball back.

The Packers had a shot at a 63-yard field goal, but came up short. Kalif Raymond returned it to about midfield, but the half ended 23-6 Packers.

Third quarter The Lions offense got off to a more promising start after a toss to Jahmyr Gibbs went for 23 yards on the first play. Goff found St. Brown for 28 on the next play. Detroit appeared to have scored a 17-yard rushing touchdown, but a holding on Kalif Raymond nullified it. Two plays later, Montgomery scored anyways. The Lions went for two and converted to make it

The Packers were able to drive to midfield, but on a third-and-4, Doubs dropped a potential first down ball, and Green Bay punted back to Detroit. A nice kick pinned the Lions down at their own 2-yard line.

The Lions picked up a single first down, but Goff just missed St. Brown on a deep shot on fourth-and-5. The Lions tried to catch the Packers sleeping on a fake punt, but it didn’t work, and the Packers took over at Detroit’s 23-yard line.

The Lions offense would get back moving into Packers territory with a methodical drive as the game pushed into the fourth quarter.

Fourth quarter Detroit immediately stalled out of the break, and on a fourth-and-7, Goff was sacked again, fumbled and the Packers recovered.

The defense would hold, keeping the game barely alive for Detroit, but another good punt pinned the offense back at the 9-yard line.

A 38-yard play to Jameson Williams gave the Lions some more life.

Another 23 to Raymond moved the Lions into the red zone. But on fourth-and-7, Goff couldn’t find LaPorta, and that pretty much ended any chance of a comeback.

The Lions would get one more shot, and they did add a late-game touchdown to Josh Reynolds + a two point conversion to LaPorta.
