Reconstruction of El Paso's Wyler Tramway moves forward with new contract approval
The reconstruction of El Paso's Wyler Tramway is progressing as the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority (CRRMA) approved International Eagle Enterprises to oversee the first phase of the project.
This phase will include enhancements such as road additions near the main entry, day-use shelters, an amphitheater, hiking trails, and a fire pit.
The contract is valued at $15.8 million.
The CRRMA provided a tentative completion date of September 2026 for the project.
The tramway was closed in 2018 after Texas Parks and Wildlife deemed it unsafe for public use.
Eric Pearson, president and CEO of the El Paso Community Foundation, emphasized the significance of the tramway, saying,
There are really no big mountains in Texas except far west Texas and so and our mountains are unique in all the world. So having this tramway, the only one that's open to the public in Texas is a wonderful thing and we can't think of a better partner than Texas Parks and Wildlife to keep it open and their commitment to keeping it open has been a wonderful thing. The CRRMA is collaborating with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the El Paso Community Foundation to manage the estimated $35 million renovation.
