Red Cross highlights vital role Latinos play in blood donation

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — During Hispanic Heritage Month, the Red Cross is shining a light on the role Latin people play in blood donation.

Officials said almost 60% of Latinos have type-O blood, which is often in short supply but in high demand for emergencies.

More than 150 Hispanic blood donors give every year helping trauma patients, those with sickle cell and people with cancer.

"They're in a room full of blood donors who are motivated like them to pay it forward because maybe someone in their family needed blood and now it's their turn and everyone leaves and they're like, I feel so good about this, and often times leave with their next appointment," said Red Cross Illinois' Connie Esparaza.

The Red Cross is offering $15 gift cards to anyone who donates until the end of the month. If anyone is interested, visit the Red Cross and schedule an appointment.
