Red flag parking restrictions issued for parts of Los Angeles

With extreme fire weather forecast and a red flag warning issued for much of Southern California by the National Weather Service, officials at the Los Angeles Fire Department announced red flag parking restrictions Tuesday.

The restrictions go into effect Wednesday at 8 a.m. and are currently scheduled to last at least 24 hours before being reevaluated based on weather conditions, an LAFD news release stated.

During red flag parking restrictions , vehicles illegally parked in posted "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones" will be towed, so that firefighter and first responders' apparatus have room to quickly navigate areas prone to fast-moving brush fires.

The restrictions also allow residents in these zones to quickly evacuate if necessary.

Earlier Tuesday, officials with the California Highway Patrol announced that an 11-mile stretch of roadway – between Mulholland Drive and Pacific Coast Highway – in Topanga Canyon will be closed starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The road will remain open to local residents but will be closed to all other traffic, officials said.

According to the National Weather Service , wind gusts could peak at 80 miles per hour across portions of L.A. and Ventura counties as humidities in the region fall to the single digits.

"For areas in the VHFHSZ, please look for the 'Red Flag Days' no parking signs and ensure you do not violate the restrictions," LAFD added.
