Sports Red Raiders' Joey McGuire Named to Bryant Award Watch List

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are preparing for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Big 12 rival Baylor Bears and sit close to the top of the conference standings at 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

One of the biggest reasons for the success in 2024 that the team is enjoying is due to the leadership of coach Joey McGuire . On Wednesday, McGuire was named to the watch list for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year award, which honors the country's top college coach each year.

McGuire is one of 27 coaches whose name was added to the watch list, and that includes four others from the Big 12. This is Texas Tech's first 3-0 start in league play since 2013.

The Red Raiders' coach is 20-13 since taking over for former coach Sonny Cumbie in 2022. McGuire is the first coach since Steve Sloan in 1975-77 to reach 20 wins in 32 or fewer games. He is 13-8 against Big 12 opponents.

On Saturday against the Bears, McGuire and the Red Raiders hope to keep their undefeated mark in the Big 12 going. It would be the first time since 2013 that Tech has started a season 4-0 in conference play since joining in 1996. A win would also make the Red Raiders bowl-eligible for a fourth straight season and for the third time under McGuire. Texas Tech leads all Big 12 programs with 41 bowl appearances overall.
