Red Wings can’t convert chances to goals, blanked by Rangers

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings outshot and out-chanced the New York Rangers by a wide margin. They hit the goal post multiple times. They dominated territorially at times. They came close to scoring on several occasions.

But since this isn't horseshoes, it doesn't matter.

Jonathan Quick made 37 saves Saturday for his 61st career shutout and the New York Rangers defeated the Red Wings 4-0 at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings (6-7-1) have dropped two in a row, scoring only one goal in the process. They were booed off the ice after the final horn.

The Rangers (9-3-1) swept the three-game season series and have won six in a row overall against the Red Wings.

Ville Husso allowed three goals on 23 shots in his first appearance with the team since being pulled midway through the season-opening loss to Pittsburgh. He was recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins Friday due to Alex Lyon's lower-body injury, which isn't expected to be long-term.

The Red Wings tilted the ice for most of the second period, controlling the play in the offensive zone. But they couldn't get one past Quick.

The Rangers then scored twice in a span of 48 seconds late in the period to build a 3-0 lead, which seemed insurmountable given the circumstances.

Jimmy Vesey was wide open in the slot when he took a pass from behind the net from Sam Carrick and converted at 16:52.

The Red Wings were scrambling and on their heels when Mika Zibanejad fed the puck to Artemi Panarin, who fired it in from a sharp angle at 17:40.

That was a crushing blow for a team that doesn't score a lot against a team that doesn't allow many goals.

Reilly Smith capped the scoring with an empty-net goal at 16:17 of the third.

It took the Rangers only seven seconds to score on their first power play against a team that entered the game ranked second-to-last in the league on the penalty kill.

Vincent Trochek won the faceoff from Andrew Copp and the Rangers moved the puck around briefly before Chris Kreider tipped in Adam Fox's blast from the point at 13:13.

That was the only scoring in the first period. The Red Wings fought an uphill battle the rest of the way.

The Red Wings start a four-game trip Wednesday in Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m., TNT).
