Red Wings recall Marco Kasper under emergency conditions

Maybe Marco Kasper can provide the Detroit Red Wings with a much-needed spark early in the season.

The Red Wings on Friday recalled Kasper, a center selected eighth overall in 2022, from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions.

They didn't specify the conditions, but it means they are down to 11 healthy forwards. So someone must have been injured in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers or is ill and not available for the next game.

Kasper will be in the lineup Saturday at Nashville (2 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit).

Kasper, 20, had a strong training camp and preseason but was sent down on Oct. 6, a day before teams were required to set their 23-man rosters.

Kasper added strength in the offseason and looked like a much more polished player than a year ago in training camp.

He had a one goal, one assist and seven penalty minutes in two games with the Griffins.

Kasper made his NHL debut as an 18-year-old on April 2, 2023, in a 5-2 victory at Toronto. It's the only NHL game he's played.
