Remembering Joplin Police Officer Timothy Nielson 20 years later

JOPLIN, Mo. — Friday marks 20 years since Joplin Patrol Officer Timothy Nielson died from injuries sustained in the line of duty.

On August 10, 2004, Nielson and Officer Greg Batson responded to 904 South McKinley for a report of a suicidal man. Shortly after arriving on the scene, the house exploded. Nielson suffered burns to 45% percent of his body and was partially trapped in the wreckage of the house. He died from his injuries a month later.

Batson suffered burns to 30% of his body and remained in critical condition for several weeks.

Nielson was 26 and had been on the force for four years. He is survived by his wife, two children, parents, and siblings.
