MISSOURI – Buzz is growing about U.S. Senator and St. Louis County native Eric Schmitt being a potential cabinet pick for President-Elect Donald Trump.

The first-term Senator from Missouri has become a close confidant of Trump, speaking at the Republican National Convention and even sitting in the Trump family section there.

Schmitt was also part of the president-elect's debate prep team. He was in Florida with Trump and his campaign team to celebrate victory on Election Night.

Schmitt talked to FOX 2 about the possible cabinet nod Thursday.

He did not deny being a candidate, adding he was more focused on advancing the Trump agenda through the Senate.

"I'm flattered to be mentioned. My focus is to help to move this thing along. It's kind of a boring answer for you right now, but it's the truth—it's just not been my focus. That stuff's not coming from me. It's an honor to be considered or being thought of in that way, I guess, but I love my job," he said.

As for the Trump agenda, he mentioned safeguarding the Trump tax cuts from his first term as president, swift action on the U.S. southern border, working toward energy independence as a way to combat inflation, as well as soaring prices.

"We have all the energy we'll ever need in this country. It's cleaner than anywhere else in the world. Let's just be a behemoth when it comes to domestic energy production. I think those policies—if we support those, we're going to see prices come down," he said.

The Trump transition team has already begun naming top aides and discussing potential cabinet picks. The president-elect has just named Susie Wiles to be his White House Chief of Staff.
