RePublic forfeits remaining 2024 TSSAA football season due to injuries, low player participation

RePublic High School has forfeited the remaining 2024 TSSAA football season due to low participation numbers, the TSSAA confirmed Monday, marking the third time in five years the program has not played a full season.

The North Nashville charter school informed the TSSAA via email that too many of its players are either injured or have left the program, TSSAA assistant executive director Richard McWhirter told The Tennessean.

The TrailBlazers went 0-5 to start the 2024 Tennessee high school football season, losing all three games it played, in addition to forfeiting non-region games at Trousdale County and Friendship Christian the past two weeks due to not having enough players.

RePublic principal Dexter Peterson, athletic director Latarsha White and football coach Curtis Carter have not returned messages from The Tennessean asking about the state of the school's football program.

RePublic did not play seasons in 2020 and 2021. It resumed playing a non-region schedule in 2022. The Trailblazers were 0-10 last fall after resuming its TSSAA region schedule. RePublic has dealt with low participation numbers dating back to 2019, when it forfeited a game against Pearl-Cohn for that reason .

The school is a combined 5-47 since 2017. Its best record was 5-6 in 2018 during former coach Ron Lambert's only season there.

RePublic was scheduled to play its Region 5-3A opener at Stratford on Friday. The school had the option to forfeit that game and continue its season but would have been ineligible for the TSSAA playoffs this season and the next two seasons per the association's bylaws.
