Republicans flip Ohio Senate seat

V.Lee20 min ago

Republican Bernie Moreno has defeated incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio.

This is the second Senate seat Republicans flipped from Democrats, along with an open seat from West Virginia.

Brown has served in the Senate since 2007. Meanwhile, his state, Ohio, has voted Republican in the last two presidential elections.

Moreno, a Cleveland-area businessman, had the support of former President Donald Trump and sought to tie Brown to the unpopular Biden administration.

Despite being a longtime fixture in Ohio politics, Brown was unable to overcome the state's increasingly Republican lean to secure another six-year term with populist appeals to middle- and working-class voters.

Democrats went into the election holding a 51-49 advantage in the Senate, counting independents who caucus with Democrats and the tiebreaker if needed from the vice president.

Experts said heading into Election Day that Democrats were looking at a tough map to retain control of the Senate, but control of the House really is up in the air.

Democrats went into the election with 23 Senate seats to defend, while Republicans had just 11 seats to retain.
