Rethinking Intersections: PennDOT Highlights Roundabout Success in Reducing Crashes
HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced compelling findings regarding the effectiveness of roundabouts in enhancing road safety. Recent data reveals that replacing traditional intersections with roundabouts has led to a 51 percent reduction in injury-related crashes and a 7 percent decrease in overall crashes over a 20-year review period.
PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the critical role of roundabouts, stating, "Roundabouts have proven to be an irreplaceable tool in reducing crashes at intersections." This statement emphasizes the agency's commitment to improving traffic flow and safety by considering roundabouts as a viable solution wherever feasible.
The study assessed 47 roundabouts on state routes, which were previously controlled by stop signs or signals, and had sufficient crash data pre- and post-construction. The analysis also identified eight new roundabouts included in this year's review:
Adams County:
Cumberland County:
Lancaster County:
Mercer County:
Philadelphia County:
Washington County:
Roundabouts not only improve safety but also enhance traffic efficiency and intersection aesthetics. While they are generally advantageous, they may not be suitable for all locations due to topographical constraints or property impacts. As PennDOT continues to explore intersection improvements, the success of roundabouts offers a compelling case for their broader adoption in future infrastructure projects.
