SURF CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — A new recreation complex, located at 380 J.H Batts Rd. is set to open on Oct. 5 in Surf City. Festivities will carry on from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. as the community is invited for a ribbon cutting, food trucks and other family activities.

"This is just the beginning for the Earl G. & Inez Batts Recreation Complex and we can't wait for the community to experience all it has to offer. Bring your family and friends to explore and celebrate with us. Together, lets create lasting memories in our community," said Surf City Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Jodi Shepard.

The facility has been in the works for years.

"The ribbon-cutting ceremony is the culmination of years of planning and hard work... We also wouldn't be at the point we are without the vision and leadership of past and current leaders in our town," said Surf City Town Manager Kyle Breuer.

According to Breuer, funding partners for the recreation center are the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, The North Carolina Land and Water Fund and residents of Surf City.

The property will now include a skatepark, playground, volleyball courts, picnic area, walking trails, parking and restrooms.

"The Town would also like to mention the appreciation for the cooperation with the Batts family, in working with the Town to be able to identify this land to be available for many generations to come," said Breuer.
