Riders stuck in midair for over 2 hours on Knott's Berry Farm ride

LOS ANGELES (AP) — More than 20 riders were suspended in midair for hours after a Knott's Berry Farm ride malfunctioned Monday afternoon.

Guests at the Southern California theme park were stuck on the Sol Spin ride after technical difficulties caused it to stop at about 2:00 p.m., a park spokesperson said.

The 22 riders were evacuated from the ride by 4:30 p.m. according to the ride manufacturer's and park's emergency procedures, the spokesperson said.

Two female guests were transported to a hospital "out of an abundance of caution," the spokesperson said.

Aerial TV footage showed riders suspended in the air in all different orientations, with some stumbling out of their seats after being lowered back to the ground. The Sol Spin brings riders up over six stories high on six independently spinning arms, according to the Knott's Berry Farm website.

County fire officials said they were at the park on standby that but the rider rescue was handled by park staff.

The family of a worker killed last week in an explosion at a Louisville manufacturing plant said Monday they begged authorities to search the wreckage for his remains after they were told all employees were accounted for. Kevens Dawson Jr.'s body was found inside the Givaudan Color Sense plant after rescuers returned to the building late in the night at the family's urging, Dawson's girlfriend, Malaika Watson, told reporters Monday. Lawyers retained by Dawson's family pledged to find the cause of the blast and why Dawson was unaccounted for for several hours.

President Joe Biden will send Congress an emergency funding bill "in the coming days," with the intent to address the urgent need for disaster relief throughout the United States following a brutal storm season, a White House official said in a memo on Monday. "The Biden-Harris Administration stands ready to work with lawmakers to deliver the vital resources our communities need with strong bipartisan and bicameral support - just as Speaker Mike Johnson has promised," Shalanda Young, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in the memo. It emphasized the fact that Congress last passed a comprehensive disaster relief package in 2022, and it stated that the Biden-Harris administration would be putting forth a new one in a matter of days.
