Several roads have been closed and events cancelled after flooding caused by sustained heavy rain.

Northamptonshire Police said it had received reports that Bedford Road, St James Road and South Street - all in Northampton - had been affected by surface water flooding. There is also flooding in the Far Cotton area of the town.

Data from the Environment Agency's rain gauges estimated that between 35mm (1.38in) and 44mm (1.7in) fell in Northamptonshire between 12:00BST and 11:00.

Several events in the county have been postponed or cancelled including the annual Cycle 4 Cynthia fundraiser for Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

The Sywell Classic at Sywell Aerodrome has been postponed, as has Northampton Town Women's home game with Loughborough Lightning at Fernie Fields.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said motorists should take "extra care" and advised against driving through any flooded roads.

The disruption comes after the Met Office extended a weather warning for rain until Monday.

BBC Weather presenter Sara Thornton said: "A clump of very heavy showers produced as much as half-an-inch (12mm) of rainfall in less than 15 minutes in some parts of Northamptonshire - enough to cause flash-flooding.

"With low pressure dominating our weather, torrential showers continue to be a possibility for the rest of today and tomorrow."

The forecaster said the Met Office had placed an amber warning for rain in place from 05:00 until 21:00 on Monday for those areas of the county which have already seen heavy rain.

"Tomorrow morning's commute in particular is likely to be impacted by heavy rain and surface flooding." she added.
