ROCK, Mich. (WLUC) - Hunters started off their deer hunt with a hot meal in Rock on Sunday. Rock Lions Club hosted its annual Hunters Breakfast Buffet . Club Member Amy Anderson says hunting is very important to the community. "This morning, when everyone was here and working and cooking, we were talking about it's like a family kitchen on Thanksgiving of Christmas," Anderson said. "Everybody's talking about the hunt. Everybody's talking about whether they got their deer or what they have been seeing." She says they serve around 150 to 200 people every year with a large selection of French toast, pancakes, bacon, sausage and potatoes. The club also brought back its potato sausage. "I think at hunting camps people do probably cook a lot, but it's kind of nice to come out here, get a break, and for the community to bond with each other, talk about their hunting stories," Anderson said. Brandon Maki will be hunting this season and it's his first Hunters Breakfast. "Honestly, it's great to see so many people come together for an event like this," Maki said. "Good camaraderie here. People are very nice, having conversations with everyone. It's good to hear the deer stories, too." Maki says the hunting culture is strong in Rock, and you could talk with an old timer who's been hunting since he was a kid. He says hunting is a deep-rooted tradition here in Rock, and hunters need a good meal before they start the season. "Especially for the guys that are gonna be spotting, stalking, all that, still hunting," Maki said. "They're gonna put on some miles. You need some fuel to walk through the woods, rough country. They're gonna be putting on some miles just like the deer right now." He says more hunters should join next year's breakfast.
