Rockford Speedway demolition near completion

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Rockford Speedway is close to being completely demolished after being sold for redevelopment.

The race track's iconic grandstands have been torn down and the asphalt has been ripped up. Rockfordians had the last chance to experience the speedway in all its glory in October 2023.

Fans also were able to collect memorabilia from the speedway grandstands and kitchen at an auction earlier this year.

The track opened in 1948 and hosted mostly local races along with a few NASCAR events.

Developers look to repurpose the land into a retail complex.
