Roundup: Cato-Meridian football edges Herkimer to stay undefeated

Cato-Meridian football is 3-0 on the season after a close home win over Herkimer on Saturday.

Quarterback Finley Stonecypher's 85 passing yards and 99 rushing yards led the Blue Devils to the 30-29 victory. He scored two touchdowns on the ground.

Also scoring twice was Logan Merriam, who had 112 yards on 14 runs for an average of 8 yards per carry. Merriam and Logan Burnett led the defense with 3.5 tackles apiece.

Cato-Meridian, which is rebounding from a 1-7 campaign last year, will next visit Hannibal on Friday.

CATO — Just two games into the 2024 season, Cato-Meridian football has won more games than it did in 2023.

Cross-country

Auburn had a good showing at the 72nd annual Baldwinsville Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, with the girls winning the large school division and the merged results for all 36 teams. The boys finished in fourth in the large school division. Top finishers were Kyleen Brady in second (18:29), Ali Pineau in third (18:50), Abby Ringwood in sixth (19:18) and Nora Burroughs in eighth (19:54) for the girls, and Owen Gasper in third (15:52.6) and Austin Ferrin in sixth (16:34.1) for the boys.

Also at the invitational, the Southern Cayuga boys placed 18th. Deagan Miller and Alan Baguio set personal records with times of 20.28 and 23.58, while the top finishers were Brady Young in 38th (18.40) for the boys and Samantha Morgan in 30th (22.25) for the girls. The girls team was incomplete and did not place. Southern Cayuga will host its only home meet of the year Tuesday, and will honor runner David Hayden for Senior Night.

Skaneateles 27, Holland Patent 6: The Lakers scored 14 first quarter points and never looked back for the road win on Saturday.

Corcoran 38, Auburn 12: The Maroons went to halftime down only 12-6, but the Cougars scored 20 in the third quarter to seal the game. Christian London and Matthew Smith had Auburn's touchdowns, both on the ground. Smith passed for 93 yards and ran for 35. Johntae Smith had nine carries for 59 yards, a catch for 10 and a sack on defense.

Boys soccer

Whitney Point 4, Union Springs/Port Byron 1: The Wolves lost at home Saturday, with Alexander Orozco-Baramaca scoring the only goal off an assist from Ian Ellis. Lucas Walawender made seven saves. Now 1-6 on the season, the Wolves will next visit Trumansburg on Tuesday. Coach Jim Hodges said in a news release he believes his young team is gaining "valuable varsity experience that will pay off in the future."

Moravia 6, Tioga 0: Patrik Walters recorded a hat trick on Saturday in the Blue Devils' win on the road. Lucas George scored his first two goals of the season while Brandon Vasquez netted one goal. Playing in the goal, Jack Lemmon recorded six saves.

Girls soccer

Union Springs/Port Byron 6, Whitney Point 0: The Wolves celebrated their homecoming with a win that saw six different players score goals, three in each half. Senior Chloe Wilde led the way with one goal and two assists.

Girls tennis

Fayetteville-Manlius 7, Auburn 0: The Maroons lost each of their matches in straight sets on Saturday in a loss on the road.

Skaneateles 5, Homer 2: The Lakers won three of their four doubles matches on Friday in a home victory. The teams of Livia Lovenguth and Madelyn Vance, and Makayla Baron and Georgia Kreidler each took their doubles match in straight sets. MaryKate Holst and Addy Pavlus won in their doubles action in three sets. In singles, Eva DeJesus and Addison Zieler each came out on top in two sets.

Auburn 3, Nottingham 0 (5-13, 25-15 and 25-23): Mia Holmes finished the Maroons' Friday home victory with 10 total points, nine digs and three assists, while Grace Mack ended with 10 total points, five digs and two blocks. Shaliyah Helmick put up 7 total points, four assists and two digs. Quinn Hoselton had a team-high six assists to go along with 2 total points and two digs. Auburn is back on the court on Tuesday when it travels to take on Fulton.
