Sacramento to host its first Native American Heritage Month parade
(FOX40.COM) — This Saturday, the first Native American Heritage Month parade will take place in Sacramento, followed by a commemoration of the Native American monument at Capitol Park.
The California Legislative Native American Caucus is organizing both events, which seek to celebrate the diversity, impact and contributions of California tribes.

The parade will take place at 10 a.m. on Capitol Mall and finish at the Capitol's west steps, along 10th St., followed by a commemoration.
Capitol Park, where the state Capitol is located, also has a statue that was unveiled in November 2023 to acknowledge Sacramento-area tribes and their millennia-long presence and contributions. The statue is the likeness of William Franklin, a member of the Miwok who spent decades preserving Native American culture.

California is among the states with the largest population of Native Americans. In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom formally apologized for the historical mistreatment , violence and neglect of the state's Indigenous peoples.
