SAGINAW, MI — The renovation of Saginaw's governmental center will move to a new stage this week.

Saginaw City Hall will close its east entrance to the public beginning Monday, Sept. 30, until crews complete the renovation project in the coming months, city officials said.

Saginaw leaders in July 2023 approved the $11.5 million renovation project , which involves removing the building's existing steam-based heating system as well as about 50 window-based air conditioning units; and adding a boiler heat system, new windows, and a variable air volume unit on the roof that is tied to the facility's heating, ventilating and air conditioning system.

Officials estimated the project work would conclude in mid-2025.

Crews began the renovations in May, at first closing the west entrance to accommodate the work.

The western entrance now will serve as the lone public access point into the building.

A handicap ramp now is accessible at the west entrance, City Hall officials said.

Saginaw leaders for more than a decade have publicly discussed their hopes of updating the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at the 87-year-old municipal headquarters. In 2010, then-City Manager Darnell Earley even suggested abandoning the building, at 1315 S. Washington , because of the mounting maintenance costs and energy inefficiencies there.
