Saginaw non-profit opens new headquarters

SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Women of Colors opened its doors at its new location at 3057 Davenport Avenue on Thursday, October 18.

Following a creed of humbleness, gratefulness and never giving up, Non-profit President Evelyn McGovern said it's a notion that has motivated the organization to last for 31 years.

"We plan to give individuals hope in our community," McGovern said. "When people say there's nothing to do. There's nowhere to go. It's because they don't want to go."

McGovern told TV5 that Women of Colors is familiar with not having somewhere to go after having to move from its old headquarters at Success Academy.

She added that after putting in 31 years of hard work in Saginaw, finding the new location was a surreal moment.

"Didn't give up stayed focused and stayed the course and it paid off being faithful to what God has put in my vision," McGovern said.

McGovern has seen Women of Colors expand services to help a number of people in the community offering social and mental based counseling to people of all walks of life.

"We want to give those people a voice. We have community forums where they speak about their struggles whether it's domestic violence, human trafficking, drugs, injustices," McGovern said. "We want to talk about everything."

McGovern explained that there are bad moments that can overshadow the good that happens in the area. She told TV5 that she wanted to stay in the fight and keep Women of Colors going for many more years to come,

"There's not one that I can think of a community center here on the west side of town and I want this to be the center that individuals can come to. No matter what side of town they live on," McGovern said.

Vice Chair Vicki Hill said she also encourages others with a similar vision.

"Start and the rest will come, but if you never start, it will never happen," Hill said. "Come and see the work that we do. Come and check out what we're doing. Come and talk to us and find out how you can be a part to help us in what we're trying to do."

Women of Colors hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10-5pm.
