Saints-Chiefs: How to watch Week 5 ‘Monday Night Football’ matchup

D.Davis2 hr ago
The Game The Kansas City Chiefs are hosting the New Orleans Saints for the Week 5 edition of "Monday Night Football." Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPN, KMBC/9 in Kansas City and WDSU/6 in New Orleans.

The defending NFL champions are 4-0 — one of only two remaining undefeated teams. (On Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Vikings reached 5-0 with a 23-17 victory over the New York Jets ). Going back to 2023, Kansas City has won 10 consecutive games. But nine of those (including all of their 2024 win) have been by a single score. The team is coming off a 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers .

After missing the playoffs with a 9-8 record in 2023, the Saints began the season by blowing out the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys . But then they collected two straight losses — most recently a 26-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons .

Three recent Chiefs are playing for the Saints in 2024: safety Tyrann Mathieu, linebacker Willie Gay Jr. and defensive tackle Khalen Saunders. Gay will miss the game with a hand injury — and so will former Kansas City defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon, who has been on New Orleans' Reserve/PUP list since the season began.

But for Chiefs fans, the familiar New Orleans player who might have the most influence on the game is quarterback Derek Carr, who started 17 games against Kansas City for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2014 through 2022. The Raiders won just three of those games — and Carr often played poorly against the Chiefs' defense. His career passer rating against Kansas City is just 83.0 — more than 10 points lower than it is against the rest of the league. Still, he's played very well during the first four games of the season — and the Chiefs' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo isn't taking him lightly.

"I've always had respect for Derek Carr," he told reporters on Friday, "and how he gets them out of a bad play and into a good one; I think that has a lot to do with [the Saints' success]. He's [also] a very accurate quarterback. And when you're talking about a third-and-3 — or four or five or whatever — he's smart enough to say, "Hey, I'm just going to get the first down here.' I think that's why they're really good."
