Samuel Marshall Davenport III, 77, a resident of the Dan Flood Towers, Kingston, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in New York City.
Born in Kingston on September 5, 1930, he was a son of the late Dr. Samuel M. Davenport and Harriet Mensch Davenport.
He was a graduate of Kingston High School, Class of 1948, and completed post-graduate studies at Wyoming Seminary in 1949.
He then obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Wilkes College and his master’s degree from Bucknell University.
He had been employed as a teacher with the Lake-Lehman School District and was later employed as the Alumni Director of Wilkes University.
Mr. Davenport was the co-owner of the former Vaudevilla Night Club and had worked at Red Lobster prior to his retirement.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. South Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, and was veteran of the U.S. Army, having obtained the rank of corporal.
He is survived by brother William C. Davenport, of Durham, N.C.; sister Barbara D. Neville, of Wolfeboro, N.H.; nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

Private internment will take place in Forty Fort Cemetery, with Pastor Peter Kuritz and Pastor Janell Wigen, of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, officiating. A public memorial service for Mr. Davenport will be held in the spring. Arrangements are by the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. and Mrs. S.M. Davenport Scholarship Fund at Wilkes University in the care of Evelene Topfer, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18766, or to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 190 S, Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
