TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Scuba instructors in training got to take a deep dive in Terre Haute.

A new way to explore underwater is coming to Terre Haute. The VCSC Aquatic Center will begin offering scuba classes starting on July 13. Southern Indiana Scuba out of Bloomington helped to train the instructors. Assistant scuba instructor Eric Shaughnessy says that it will bring a unique experience.

"A lot of people like to snorkel, and scuba diving is snorkeling with a tank on your back," Shaughnessy said. "If you are snorkeling across the water and you want to dive down real deep and see something, you can only be there for a few seconds. With a scuba tank, depending on how deep you go, you can stay underwater for over an hour if you stay near 30 feet. You get to see all of the beautiful things that are around."

The scuba class showcases the versatility of the aquatic center, and now brings an exciting opportunity to the public. Aquatic center director Mike Williams says that it is more than a lap pool.

"We've got a beautiful facility here, and a lot of people just think of this as a lap pool, which it is, it's a gorgeous lap pool, really unique for this area," Williams said. "Because it is a deep-water pool, it's 12.5 feet deep at its deepest, we can offer some other things, like scuba."

The classes will be on July 13 and 20 and the cost is $565 per participant. For more information, email Williams at
