WEEK 5

Sleep deprivation can affect all aspects of your life: your diet, your workouts, your stress, etc. Don't feel guilty about squeezing in a short nap to help your body recharge. A 30-minute nap or even an extended rest period of laying down (without a nap) have been found to improve alertness and performance.

Look for chances to be more active during the day. Walk the mall before shopping, take the stairs instead of the escalator or take 10 to 15 minute walking or activity breaks while watching TV or sitting. Don't get discouraged if you stop for a while. Get started again and gradually work up to your old pace. Don't exercise too vigorously right after meals, when it's very hot or humid, or when you just don't feel up to it.

Identify stressors in your life and try to keep a distance. It's not always possible to do, but removing anything causing you stress is an improvement. If the stress can't be removed, can it be improved? Brainstorm ways to reduce these stress points in your day-to-day life. You can always ask for help too! Your friends are good resources to ask about how to approach these issues.

3•21 Fun & Friends is a social group for families with young children, ages 0-10, who have a disability in the Sioux Falls area. Join our monthly meetups in the Special Olympics South Dakota Unify Center to socialize, play, and build a community. These meet-ups will be free of cost, in a setting where children can play with their peers and parents can connect. If you are reading this and wondering if this group is for you, it is! We hope you'll come to our next meet-up.
