Search and rescue efforts continue in Buncombe Co.

(WSPA) – 14 Urban Search and Rescue teams are operating in central Buncombe County, planning on moving eastward.

Eight of the USAR teams are federal resources, six are from North Carolina and three are local. Local Fire Departments and Emergency Operations assets are also continuing to work side by side in order to conduct thorough searches.

In the western areas of Buncombe County near Leicester, Candler, and Beaverdam, local authorities and emergency responders have assessed the storm damage as limited.

According to county officials, 90% of primary searches have been completed, which involve a 360-degree exterior survey of structures that appear undamaged. Areas with severe damage or debris piles will take longer to complete.

Those who are in need of shelter and resources, residents can visit the following locations:

  • AB Tech Conference Center, 16 Fernihurst Drive, in Asheville

  • Please use Victoria Road Entrance

  • Gold's Gym, 1815 Hendersonville Road in Asheville

  • This location has a playroom for children, so it may be more suitable for families.

  • Please note that no pets are allowed at this location.

  • Medical Emergency Shelter, 10 Genevieve Circle in Asheville

  • This shelter is for individuals who are dependent on medical equipment that require power

  • Waste Pro's collection service will resume for regular Monday route customers. They will collect household garbage from locations where collection vehicles can safely reach.
