See tracks, think train: TriMet warns train track safety

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - After several close calls with trains, TriMet warned drivers and pedestrians alike to be safe and cautious on roads with rails.

Two recent incidents, a car swerving into the lane of a MAX train, and a person running across the tracks almost immediately after, were caught on camera by TriMet.

Those close calls can be even more dangerous at night when operators can't see as well.

A single MAX train weighs nearly 100 tons and can be difficult to stop on command.

Accidents on train tracks cause more than 2,000 deaths across the country every year.

TriMet said there are a few things people can do to stay safe.

  • stay in your lane
  • ditch the distractions
  • stay alert when you're driving
  • never run across tracks or through station areas
