See where Trump, Harris had biggest support in Ann Arbor area

ANN ARBOR, MI — The fact that support for Republican Donald Trump grew 17% in Ann Arbor in the Nov. 5 election left leaders of the liberal college town scratching their heads. "I don't know what to make of that change," Mayor Christopher Taylor said the day after the election. "I'd be interested to know where that change occurred within the city, where those additional votes came from." While Harris still had over six times as many votes as Trump in Ann Arbor — 59,424 to 8,951 — she only did about 200 votes better than Joe Biden did four years ago, while Trump gained nearly 1,300 votes in the city. And across Washtenaw County, Harris netted 172 fewer votes than Biden had in 2020, while Trump's tally grew by 2,557. MLive/The Ann Arbor News has mapped the 2020 and 2024 election results for each precinct in the county, showing one area Harris lost support as Trump gained votes was around the University of Michigan campus where many students live. See 2024 results by precinct: In some parts of Ann Arbor's north and west sides, Harris had over 90% support, and she had over 80% support throughout much of the city. But in some precincts around the UM campus, her support dropped to 77-79% where support for Biden was around 87-89% in 2020, as Trump saw his share of votes in some cases go up from about 10% to 20%. See 2020 results by precinct: City precincts changed from 2020 to 2024, making it difficult to compare results at a granular level, but in one campus-area precinct unchanged, Harris outpaced Trump 639-161, while in 2020 it was 764-90 between Biden and Trump. That means Harris lost 125 votes there, while Trump gained 71. In more rural areas outside of Ann Arbor, Trump had over 60% support in some cases.
