Sen. Tammy Baldwin pushes new disaster relief bill

MADISON, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Last year's record low snowfall left businesses that rely on winter recreation struggling and now help could be on the way.

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) has introduced a bill that would allow businesses to receive disaster relief during low-snow seasons.

The Small Business Administration offers loans to businesses impacted by disasters like floods, drought, and blizzards.

Reimbursement has been a challenge for those impacted by a lack of snow.

The bill is co-sponsored by Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN).

"Folks who would typically travel from near and far to go ice fishing, or snowmobiling, or skiing benefit our local hotels and main street shops and bars and restaurants," Baldwin said. "Last winter that just didn't happen and so, we have to make sure that those small businesses have a lifeline."

The bill was introduced Thursday and is going before committees.
