‘Senseless gun violence.’ Muscogee County schools mourn student shot getting off bus

A crisis intervention team is helping a Muscogee County school grieve the loss of one of its students the day after a 15-year-old was shot dead at a Columbus bus stop .

The Columbus Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting that happened after school Thursday in the 2300 block of Watkins Drive and left Earkavion Lee dead, according to investigators.

In a news release Friday morning, Muscogee County School District communications director Kimberly Wright said Earkavion was a freshman at Kendrick High School.

Wright said MCSD "mourns the tragic loss of one of our students." She called the incident "senseless gun violence."

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire school community during this incredibly difficult time."

MCSD's crisis intervention team comprises trained professionals who help address the emotional needs of students, parents and staff. School counselors also are available to assist, Wright said.

"The safety and well-being of our students are always our top priorities," she said. "We are confident that the Columbus Police Department will continue its thorough investigation into this matter, and we ask for respect and privacy for the family at this time."

Columbus police seeking tips

CPD was leading the investigation into the shooting, officials said. Investigators didn't immediately release any suspect information.

Police have asked anyone with information about this shooting to call 911 or 706-225-3161.
