Shelter receives new transport van

Oct. 15—GREENSBURG — The Greensburg and Decatur County Animal Shelter have a new transport vehicle, compliments of the Friends of the GDCAS.

The 2011 Ford Transit Connect, complete with insurance and a new wrap, made it home from Dayton, Ohio, Oct. 2 to take its place in the GDCAS fleet. Paid for by a grant, it's fully loaded with built-in cages, heating and air conditioning.

The van was purchased by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton utilizing Best Friends Animal Society funding for GDCAS.

Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit 501©(3) animal welfare organization based in Kanab, Utah. The organization awards grants nationwide to support pet adoption, no-kill animal rescue, and spay-and-neuter practices.

In early 2024, GDCAS Director Minde Myers and Friends President Chris Ramey requested an extension on funding for their Shelter Adoption Coordinator and Grant Coordinator positions, which they installed at the Shelter in August of 2023.

Originally requesting a meager $18,000 to finance the two positions for another year, they were confident they'd receive it.

"But what we got was $60,000. We were so surprised," Myers said.

The new addition to the GDCAS fleet will be used to transport animals to and from off-site adoption events, spay and neuter appointments, and animal rescue operations.

Friends of the GDCAS are a not-for-profit established to provide assistance for the Greensburg and Decatur County Animal Shelter. To make a donation, call 812-593-6537, email them at or visit them on Facebook.
