Officials in Los Angeles said a man killed in a shooting Thursday was identified as a convicted drug trafficker who has ties to the Sinaloa Cartel and is friendly with the son of drug kingpin, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Eduardo Escobedo, 39, was one of two men who were gunned down in Willowbrook.

The other victim was identified as a convicted drug dealer, 47-year-old Guillermo De Los Angeles Jr.

The sheriff’s department said Escobedo and De Los Angeles died Thursday morning in the shooting that took place in an industrial part of the city.

A third man who was wounded in the incident was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The man wasn’t identified.

Lt. Omar Camacho told KABC-TV that the men were in the area for “some type of gathering or party at the location” that started Wednesday night and continued into Thursday morning.

Escobedo, known as “El Mago” or “The Magician,” was a major marijuana trafficker for the Sinaloa Cartel.

He served more than four years in federal prison for conspiring to distribute over 20,000 pounds of pot and then attempt to launder the proceeds. Escobedo was released in 2018.

Escobedo is an American citizen who was raised in East Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Escobedo became chummy with Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, El Chapo’s oldest son, and worked as Guzman Salazar’s main marijuana distributor in the city.

Escobedo is also accused of ordering a hit on a rival drug trafficker who was shot and killed in 2008.

Escobedo was never charged in the murder, but his brother and another man were convicted and are now serving life sentences for the killing.
