SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A new grocery option for residents in the central part of Sioux City continues to move forward.

Sioux City's Planning and Zoning Commission approved Tuesday a change in zoning for the property at 1303 and 1315 Douglas Street, from Mixed Use to General Commercial.

Development of a grocery store is planned at the location of the former Casa del Rey restaurant, which closed many years ago. The zoning request comes from Lusio Torres, who said the store will include normal grocery items such as produce as well as alcohol and tobacco. The store would close each day at 9 p.m.

"We're excited to see a property that hasn't been getting used for a long time," commission president Andrew Gilsar said. "It's been kind of vacant, and finding a new home and finding a good use for the community... we're always happy to see grocery stores go in around communities that can get to them."

The zoning change must still receive approval from city council. No time frame for a store opening was provided.
